The final phase of the News 1st Gammedda Door to Door public service initiative continued on to the twentieth day, reaching out to the most rural communities in the country, to give a voice to the voiceless.
The campaign is supported by the University of Peradeniya and got underway in the Colombo, Batticaloa and Kandy Districts on Monday March 14.
When the team touring the Batticaloa District visited several areas including Uththuchena area, the team discovered the main issue affecting the locals of the village -the absence of a proper road system. The Uththuchena Tamil College, which is the only school for the area, provides education only up to the 9th Grade and has five teachers.
Upon visiting the Karadiyanu area in Batticaloa, our teams met a group of students who have to walk nearly 10 kilometres each day to obtain their education.
Government or NGOs should do the needful for these students.
